to sell a work of art
|

|
While the decision to purchase a work of art is always
voluntary, the decision to part with a work of art is not
necessarily voluntary. Indeed, in most cases, the moment to
sell a work of art cannot be ordered, and the decision to sell
is instead imposed by life’s events (moving, divorce,
death, etc.). However, as part of the active management of a
collection, it is easy to decide that the moment has come to
sell. Either because one wants to change the focus of
one’s collection, or because one lacks the funds to
improve the latter, while the art market is just now favourable
to the type of work with which one intends to part.
As is the case for any transaction
involving financial compensation, you are strongly advised to
use the services of a professional. While it is true that the costs incurred as a
result of the profession’s assistance will be deducted
from the transaction’s profits, in general, this person
will be able to provide you with useful advice, which will
enable you to market your object effectively and in so doing,
to sell it at the highest price.
The choice of professional is made based on the
person’s seriousness, integrity and competence in the
area. One does not contact an international auction house to
sell a painting by a local artist: the costs incurred to send
the work abroad are not justified and the sales price may well
be lower than what one could obtain on the domestic market.
Similarly, one does not ask a second hand trader for advice
concerning an important piece of furniture, just as one does
not ask a well-known antique dealer for his opinion on an
earthenware plate... Everyone has his niche. In the end, what
counts is for the advice to be truly professional: in other
words, it must be furnished by someone who is well established
and is officially recognised as a professional in this area.
Working with amateurs can sometimes turn out to be very
expensive...
It is also important to put all your trust in this
professional. As the art market has a reputation for being
opaque, many people have a tendency to condemn anyone who is
directly or indirectly related to it. Although it is
appropriate to be wary, this should not become the
seller’s main concern. On the contrary, a relationship of
close trust must lead to improved co-ordination of efforts. How
many sellers jeopardise the sale of their object by asking for
advice left and right, and listening to everyone and anyone?
Bounameaux can
assist you in the sale of a work of art, either taking over
transaction, by private treaty between the parties or advising
you on the auction house (national or international) where we
consider that you will obtain the best price. Please do not
hesitate to contact us. Together we will consider the best
solution in total discretion.
